KIRSTY COVENTRY stormed past her six male competitors to win the election for President of the Interntionl Olympic Committee (IOC). She is the first woman president; at 41 she is the youngest ever; and she is the first African to hold the post.

The post of president is seen as an extremely powerful one in international sport. Kirsty, who is currently Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, is already a member of the IOC Board, but this promotion will enable her to modernise the Olympics. She will focus on making the Games sustainable, as well as bringing in new technology to enhance the Games for competitors and the audience.

Kirsty is a former swimmer, who won two Olympic god medals. She promised that as President she would work to empower athletes. She is known to favour imposing a blanket ban on transgender women competing in women’s competitions at the Olympics: she sees this as protecting the female competitions.

“It’s a really powerful signal,” said Kirsty after the result was announced. “It’s a signal that we’re truly global and that we have evolved into an organisation that is truly open to diversity and we’re going to continue walking that road in the next eight years.”

“I hope that this vote will be an inspiration to many people,” she continued. Glass ceilings have been shattered today, and I am full aware of my responsibilities as a role model.”

A total of 97 representatives were able to vote in the election. Kirsty secured 49 votes, winning on the first round. Juan Antonio Samaranch came second, with 28 votes. UK contender Sebastian Coe ended up in third place, winning just eight votes. Interviewed after the result was announced, he congratulated the winning candidate – but sounding rather deflated. David Lappartient from France and Morinari Watanabe received four votes each and Prince Feisal al Hussein from Jordan and Johan Eliasach from Sweden received two votes each.

The new president will begin work on ensuring that the Winter Games which will be held In Italy next February are a success.

WHEN IS A BBC Radio 4 news report about Tower Hamlets Council not accurate? The answer is: at 7.45am on Saturday, 30th September 2023, when the Today programme broadcast an item about a women’s football in Tower Hamlets.

The report stated that Vicky Park Rangers FC, a football club for young women aged 12-16, had not been able to book a training slot for its teams. The presenter interviewed Taner Baycanli, who describes himself as the (Vicky Park Rangers) Club Chairman. He told how the Club had booked a slot but then withdrew it and offered alternative slots that were not suitable. It was not made clear whether the report was live or not – but the presenter certainly rushed Taner and cut him off as soon as he had reported the basics.

One of the reasons why the presenter cut Taner up was to read a statement from Tower Hamlets Council. It was read in a hurried fashion, and it sounded like a summary of a longer statement, but the gist of it was: Tower Hamlets fully supports women’s participation in sport. They were offered a different slot on the same pitch or a nearby Council-run Leisure base turned down by the Club.

So far, so good… so what’s the problem? The problem is a statement from the said Taner Baycanli which had been circulating on social media in Tower Hamlets for some hours before the Today programme aired. The statement revealed that the booking issue had been resolved some twelve hours earlier – at 7.52pm on Friday, 29th September, to be precise.

The statement went on to say that Mayor Lutfur Rahman and intervened and ensured that a satisfactory compromise was found.

It seems that the BBC would prefer to run a negative story about Tower Hamlets rather than an accurate one. Why the Council, when asked for a statement for broadcast, did not clarify that the matter had been resolved is not clear.

We know that we do not have enough pitches and sports spaces which are available at rates local teams with young players can afford to meet demand in Tower Hamlets. We can only hope that as many teams as possible can be accommodated – and can now concentrate on the game they play and those who play it.

We approached the BBC and Tower Hamlets Council for comment, but at the time of publication neither has yet supplied a statement for publication.

FORMER ENGLAND CAPTAIN Nasser Hussain OBE has launched a “Clubs in Need” programme, in collaboration with Capital Kids Cricket (CKC).

The ground-breaking initiative, launched last Thursday at the Leyton County Cricket Ground, aims to rejuvenate struggling cricket clubs while bridging the gap in transitioning young cricketers – boys and girls – from soft ball to hard ball cricket, addressing critical challenges within the community.

Cricket clubs play a pivotal role in nurturing future talent and fostering healthy communities. However, many of these clubs are facing severe challenges, including declining engagement, volunteer shortages, limited parental involvement, weak school connections, and the looming threat of collapse.

Nasser Hussain OBE expressed his passion for this initiative, stating, “As a cricket community, we all need to come together alongside the ECB, County Boards, funders, local authorities, and support each other. Lots of good work has already been done, but more needs to be accomplished.”

Shahidul Alam Ratan, CEO of Capital Kids Cricket, emphasised the importance of inclusivity, saying, “The game is missing out on many young talents from cricket clubs, particularly those from ethnically diverse communities. It’s time to step up and do something about it.”

The programme launch event was attended by enthusiastic schoolchildren and club junior members. Nasser Hussain actively engaged with them, participating in a cricket session. Numerous cricket clubs have expressed their interest in joining the programme. Currently, CKC is collaborating with county boards to ensure that the most deprived clubs receive vital support as soon as possible.

“Clubs in Need” will provide tailored assistance to each club, focusing on various key aspects, including:
establishing strong links with local schools, communities and local authorities;
increasing women and girls’ participation;
recruiting volunteers and mentoring coaches;
asssting with club coaching and organising holiday camps;
offering logistical support for away game when possible;
promoting clubs within schools and community groups via social media, flyers, websites, newsletters and local media.

One of the critical challenges addressed by the programme is the difficulty some clubs face in retaining members due to logistical issues. This leads to match cancellations and missed competitive opportunities. The “Clubs in Need” initiative will also focus on addressing the knowledge gap which often prevents clubs from accessing available funding.

The programme will work to strengthen networks that support club committees and key personnel by leveraging local knowledge in collaboration with local authorities, county boards, schools, and community groups.
