Emdad Rahman

THIS SUMMER runners of all abilities will unite in one of the world’s most inclusive and diverse cities to celebrate the things that bring us together. Jarnail Singh will be one of thousands of runners and here he shares his thoughts with our readers.

What is your inspiration for running?
Inspiration for me is being myself, knowing myself deeper inside – and my self-worth. Because your self-worth is never decreased by your age, your body shape, your colour, your circumstances or anything you’re tackling in your life right now. I am inspired by my willpower to accept challenges that I come across. If you get over your fear of accepting the challenge, you are already a winner. Many people don’t ever dare to accept those challenges.

Do you have have a running model?
All the aspiring minds making an effort to be better, driven by their passion, willpower to accomplish their goals – no matter how slow or fast, their body shape or ethnicity they are. These, all above people, are my running role models. They are ambassadors of movement, making difference in their own lives an inspiring example for many others.

What is the longest distance you’ve run?
I have run the marathon distance and I’m looking forward to getting used to this distance and going further in future to run ultra distances!

Are you running for a cause?
The real reason why I started running is for myself, my self-confidence, self-esteem, and to take the responsibility of being better. Once you know your cause then you can contribute to society because it’s important to give back to the community.
I run for The Running Charity, which is helping homeless youth to make their lives better with the help of running. I have also run for Cancer Research UK, Dragon Fly Cancer Trust, Brent Centre For Youth, and Khalsa Aid For Humanity.

Your thoughts on this run?
The ASICS London 10K is very important and last year taught me life lessons when I did my first race pacer duty as a “walk/jog”. I learned how to be patient. Your pace is not always constant, you need to slow down to help others in need. This is the perfect example to retune ourselves in real life too.

Does running bring communities together?
There is no denying the fact that running is bringing all communities together and fills all the differences. What I have found in last 18 months is how diversity is important and running is a perfect example. Spread love, positivity, lift up others, encourage, embrace them and share a message of peace.

How often do you run in a week?
I normally run three to four days on my training days.

Do you train for long running events?
I have a few 10Ks and half marathons later this year. The Great North Half and maybe the Ealing Half or Royal Parks. Next year, ASICS Manchester is on my list, and if my star shines again, I will run the London Marathon (again)!

What training tips do you have for our readers?
Well I’m still a learner and not on the level to give tips. However, I would say, stay consistent, learn and know your body, don’t get too excited to see others running as they might be at a different level.

Also, join run clubs if you don’t like running or get bored easily. They’re a good source of knowledge and a great way to make new friends. I now lead the ASICS Run Club London.

Do you have any advice for new and aspiring runners?
I have heard a-lot from new runners that they are comparing themselves with others and either they try to push themselves too much or underestimate themselves and lose their faith very quickly.
Like I said earlier, stay consistent and seek knowledge you will be there one day. It’s only your journey. When you run the ASICS London 10k you’re running united, and together can achieve anything.

For more information about the ASICS London 10k, go to:
www.asicslondon10k.com

Ahead of the ASICS London 10K on Sunday 21st July, ASICS is telling the stories of 17 runners and exploring their personal reasons for running to highlight the differences we all have as runners but also the unifying impact of running and how when we run together, amazing things happen.

The eclectic group of runners, who came from all corners of the country – from Leeds and Preston to Hampshire and London – were brought together through several different groups including The Running Charity, Backpackers and the ASICS FrontRunner community.

The revealing video gives an insight into how people started running, who inspires them, what music they run to, as well as exploring the various things that make them tick. Be it Afrobeat or video game soundtracks, to being inspired by a parent or inspiring yourself, each runner’s reasons for running are wildly different – but strip that all away and it’s the love people have for running that unites everyone.

BARKING & DAGENHAM resident Emdad Rahman has been spreading a little happiness with the London Relay 2019. He has also had an eventful week in his quest to achieve two milestones.

The Dagenham 88 runner was joined by family, friends and team mates at Barking Park to complete 100 Parkruns – and join an exclusive club.

Just before achieving the milestone, Emdad, who works and volunteers in Tower Hamlets seven days a week, took part in the 10K London Relay to support The Running Charity and young homeless citizens. He completed his leg of the Relay during his lunch hour.

Speaking after the run Emdad said, “Homelessness is a huge passion of mine so I needed very little convincing to join this complete group of strangers in taking part in this 24/7 one month relay. Hopefully our efforts will raise lots of money and, more importantly, huge awareness. We start and finish on the doorstep of Mayor Sadiq Khan and the hugely diverse runners are of all skin tones, cultures, shapes and sizes. Well done everybody for a mammoth effort!”

Thanks to the support of sponsors and partners, the London Relay has returned and the organisers aim to create a radically inclusive community that transcends all postcodes while challenging the city’s social issues

The Relay – a 24/7 baton exchange run of 5k and 10k – will bring together runners from near and far to help support The Running Charity and the thousands of young people across London who are homeless right now, facing the real threat of another night alone on the streets.

Through violence, abuse, neglect and mental health problems young people become homeless because it’s safer to leave home than to stay. Every hour of every loop of the London Relay, a shocking eleven young people ask their local authority for help because they are either homeless or at risk.

Over 80,000 young people in the UK are homeless right now and, with homeless young people almost twice as likely to die as their non-homeless peers, there is an urgent need to support The Running Charity to transform young lives.

With this in mind The London Relay are proud to be partnering with The Running Charity who are on the frontline, transforming these young lives through the power of running.

Danny Bent, London Relay Founder said, “Young people have their whole lives ahead of them. They just need the opportunity to turn their lives around. The Running Charity create this opportunity. By donating and fundraising you can help provide long-term solutions to the problem.”

WHAT A VICTORY! Bangladesh went to Taunton to take on the West Indies in the cricket World Cup – with a little uncertainty over their form. There’s no uncertainty now.

It was a triumph of timing. Yes, Bangladesh was set a huge challenge. The Windies batted first and managed to get to 321 for 8 in their 50 overs. Shai Hope ended just short of a century, with Evin Lewis securing 70 and Shimron “I’m not here to mess about” Hetmeyer getting his 50 in just 26 balls. What were the Bangladeshi bowlers thinking, letting the Windies off the hook? Surely this was too high a total to reach?

If the total hadn’t been so high, it wouldn’t have been such a thrilling match. When Bangladesh came in to bat, the one-trick Windies were stuck: they bowled short, only to find that Bangladesh could play the short ball!

That is to say that Shakib Al Hasan could play the short ball. He reached his century and carried on scoring – getting to an unbeaten 124 before he had to stop because the match was won. It would have been a splendid Test Match innings, and it meant that most of the lower order went home with clean pads.

Two wickets were lost before Shakib took charge at 133 for 3 after 19 overs. It was his second century in two matches – this one off 83 balls – and he was rewarded with the Man of the Match award. Shakib responded by musing that he had been working on his batting for the last few weeks. Pleased as he was to see the work pay off, he thought he could still get better.

Shakib was ably assisted by a calm and focussed innings from a cheeky Liton Das. Das was steadily adding to the runs – until he went up a gear and hit the Windies’ Shannon Gabriel for six. And six again. And six again! Three balls and a hat-trick of sixes. Class. Das’s sudden burst took him up to 94 not out from 69 balls. He must have been disappointed not to get his century – but he had the consolation of hitting the winning shot. His final boundary clinched a Bangladesh victory with 51 balls to go and seven wickets in hand. It was the second highest chase in World Cup history.

The once mighty West Indies would need a miracle to get through to the semi-finals. Bangladesh, now fifth in their Group, are not home and dry yet – as team captain Mashrafe Mortaza acknowledged in his post-match interview. “We have a chance to go through,” he said, “but we have to win all of our matches.” Mortaza paid tribute to Shakib’s innings. The team will need his form to continue if they are to reach the next stage.

NEO CRICKET CLUB delivered a colourful family fun day at Leyton County Ground in celebration of the Cricket World Cup.

There was an array of family entertainment on show throughout the ground, including a bouncy castle and popular board games like Carrom and Ludo. Alongside a wide range of fun activities, a wide selection of food and drinks was served throughout the day.

The events ran alongside plenty of cricket. Leyton Wicketz Under-12 players, led by National Cricket League (NCL) co-founder Sajid Patel, played a friendly fixture to start off the day. This was followed by the NCL Champions Division fixture, played between Neo CC and Ocean XI. There was also live coverage of the India -v- Australia World Cup game.

The ICC and ECB are keen to support events of this nature, which are an opportunity to reach out to the local community and engage the younger generation. The Neo Cricket Club was just one of nearly 3,000 clubs which have signed up to run a day or weekend of family-based activities – and their Fun Day certainly attracted local residents, thanks to ICC/ECB support.

Club Secretary Ayaz Karim said, “To expand local cricketing communities through the excitement of the World Cup tournament, we organised this family Fun Day. Organisations like Capital Kids, NCL, Leyton Wicketz, and Waltham Forest Council came forward to support us, which means a lot to us. I would like to thank all our dedicated club volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to deliver a fantastic event like this in Waltham Forest.”

THE ENGLAND Women’s Football Team have swept aside Argentina in Le Havre – and reached the knock out stages of the Women’s Football World Cup.

The victory is all the sweeter as it comes 35 years after Argentina knocked the England Men’s team out of the 1986 World Cup in a game most remembered for Diego Maradona’s “hand of God” goal.

The game, played out on Friday evening, 14th June, didn’t have the best start. England’s Alex Greenwood was tripped up – earning the team a penalty. Up stepped Nikita Parris: but a brilliant save by Argentina’s goalie Vanina Correa denied England an early lead. England put Correa to the test again – but had problems finishing several strong attacks. Correa let nothing through till Jodie Taylor got her feet on a cross from Beth Mead on the hour.

Having finally taken the lead, England dominated possession and were unlucky not to score again. They held on to achieve their second victory in the Group rounds and top the Group D table.

England will have the luxury of a third group match against Japan: vital practice for the knock-out matches to come.
