OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST and former Dancing on Ice judge Robin Cousins has launched the £30m Lee Valley Ice Centre in front of an exclusive group of skaters, school children and other stakeholders.

The elegant world class centre, which opened to the general public on Saturday 17th June, is one of only three in the country, and the first in the Southeast, to have two Olympic-sized rinks. It also has a gym, dance studios, community spaces and a café. It will be a new community hub for East London, alongside the award-winning open spaces in Lee Valley Regional Park.

A welcome addition to sport and leisure facilities in the region, it is expected to boost the local economy by as much as £1.5 million annually and attract half a million visitors a year – double that of the old Lee Valley Ice Centre which, after 37 years, could not cope with demand.

It has been completed within budget and features extensive environmental, landscaping and biodiversity improvements. It is the culmination of a £30 million investment by venue owner Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, with support from the London Borough of Waltham Forest, to create a world leading ice venue on the site of the old Lee Valley Ice Centre on Lea Bridge Road, Leyton.

Olympic Gold Medallist and President of British Ice Skating, Robin Cousins said:I skated at the opening gala of the old Lee Valley Ice Centre in 1984. It’s fantastic to see that journey continue with this stunning new state of the art space – the perfect place to launch Skate UK, our new national learn-to-skate programme. Having these two Olympic size rinks in London is a game changer, and I’m sure they will attract thousands of people of all ages and abilities, from World level competitors, community groups and families, to the first timers, who will experience the joy of ice skating and all it has to offer”

The launch featured a range of skaters, including Adie Caston, whom Robin coaches, the Lee Valley Lions ice hockey teams, coaches, some of the first people who skated at the old centre and schoolchildren – all getting onto the pristine ice for the first time.

The centre will attract customers from a range of communities from across the region – giving them the chance to use elite level facilities and enjoy public skating sessions where anyone can come and try skating. It provides future stars with a much-needed place to train, as some currently travel up to four hours for on-the-ice coaching sessions, and it will be home to ice hockey and synchronised skating clubs.

Shaun Dawson, Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said:The stunning new Lee Valley Ice Centre replaces our much loved old venue which had, for 37 years, provided a wonderful place for people of all ages, especially young people, to meet, socialise and stay active. At a time when many sport and leisure facilities across the country are at risk of closure, I’m so proud that we have gone beyond simply protecting the old centre, to having instead more than doubled the capacity and created a truly inspirational venue that is at the cutting edge of leisure, with world class facilities that will support physical and mental wellbeing for generations to come.”

Grace Williams, Leader of Waltham Forest Council, said: “We’re very excited about the opening of the new Lee Valley Ice Centre on Lea Bridge Road. It is going to be absolutely fantastic having such a world class venue in our borough and, as well as having these incredible facilities on our doorstep, I’m really pleased that Lee Valley Ice Centre will also play a key role in supporting the community. The venue is going to become a focal point for so many people, with the council helping fund a range of community-based programmes working with young people and a whole host of different local groups.”

British Ice Skating – the sport’s National Governing Body – is launching its new Skate UK course at Lee Valley Ice Centre. Designed for all ages, and delivered by British Ice Skating qualified coaches, Skate UK will teach everything from basic ice skating skills, speed skating, ice dancing and synchro and is expected to further extend the reach and appeal of ice skating, which has been experiencing a resurgence in recent years thanks to popular shows like Dancing on Ice.

A range of programmes including a Targeted Crime Prevention Programme, Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme, Biodiversity Awareness Education Programme and an Employment and Apprenticeship Scheme, will run for ten years with the support of £1m funding from the London Borough of Waltham Forest.

In addition, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority will deliver a £250,000 Community Engagement Programme over the next ten years too. The fund will support access to the venue for community groups and schools across Waltham Forest and Hackney and will give 68,000 people the opportunity to participate in different activities and take part in biodiversity learning programmes at the new venue free of charge.

Lee Valley Ice Centre will be the most sustainable ice venue in the UK, combining innovative architectural features and £1.5 million-worth of landscaping, planting and environmental improvements. It uses solar panels, wastewater recycling and has fully electric operations. It is constructed using gabion baskets, which have built in nesting and bat boxes and is surrounded by meadows and new trees to attract and support wildlife and local biodiversity.

It will be open seven days a week from 6am-10pm and operated is by GLL. Skating for an adult is £10 and for under 18s is £8. Skate hire is £3. Bookings, and full information, including gym and exercise classes, is at:

THE YEAR 2022 was one of achievement for London Sportif, and they celebrated with a glittering awards ceremony in central London.

The glittering event was hosted at Portcullis House, Westminster, by Apsana Begum MP (Poplar & Limehouse) and hosted by Minara Meghna Uddin. Special guests on the night included Tower Hamlets Speaker Shafi Ahmed and Camden Mayor Nasim Ali.

President Ibrahim Khalil spoke of the club’s success. Last year we won five championships across London,” he said.Cricket leagues and the managers, coaches and players have made us all proud.” Treasurer Atikur Rahman added, “Congratulations to all our award winners. You have set the benchmark high for those who will follow you.

Badminton was introduced in 2022, and the tireless work of volunteers has resulted in hundreds of players taking up the sport for recreation and to improve fitness. Badminton co-ordinator Muhi Mikdad commented, “We promote fun and active participation, and I am pleased to report that we have done fairly well on both counts. This year we will do our best to do even more to engage people.

Club Manager Kalim Uddin concluded, We are a family here, and we share a passion to serve our community through sports. Our activities bring people together and promote wellbeing. I’m deeply proud of our achievements.”

There was a special award for Taj Accountants for sponsorship of the Club throughout, as well as recognition for Sunna Musk, Everard, and Crystal Tyres and Bodywork.

London Enterprise Academy headteacher Ashid Ali was unanimously awarded the Annual Community Award for promoting and accommodating London Sportif activities, which have benefitted hundreds of young people.

London Sportif was established in 2017 in the East End. The organisation was created to target both youth and adults through different sports activities. The club now boasts three sports clubs – badminton, cricket, and football – and all activities and games take place regularly, during the week and at weekends.

The overall intention is to reach out to marginalised sections of the community, to provide sporting opportunities to BAME communities, people with disabilities and women.

THE TRENDY Momlette Fusion Cafe in Brick Lane are proud to announce that they will be sponsoring the up and coming Bengali professional boxer Khalid Ali.

Khalid is the son of local boxing coach Walid Ali, who has done much to promote boxing as an alternative to antisocial behaviour and inspired youngsters to engage with the sport. The boxing protégé, who is signed under Frank Warren, has enjoyed success since emerging on the scene.

On behalf of Momlette café, Shahaveer Hussain commented, “Khalid Ali is an exceptional young man and we are really pleased to be able to be supporting such a precocious talent. He is a young man with a sense of belonging and a heightened sense of achievement, and he takes his role model status very seriously. We are all very proud of him and wish him great success in his career.”

Khalid (4-0) is fighting Croatian Ivica Gogosevic tonight on the undercard of undefeated, unified light-heavyweight champion of the world, Artur Beterbiev and Anthony Yarde. The fight can be viewed tonight on BT Sport from 7pm onwards.

GET READY to discover the grand and quirky sites hidden in your locality as the Local Landmarks 10k returns on 19th February. Map your own 10k route around your area, register – and run.

Here are three good reasons to take part in the Local Landmarks 10k.
It’s the perfect motivation to kick start your running in 2023: whether you walk, jog or run, exploring your local area will help you keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Perhaps you’re returning to running after some time off – if so, the shiny golden medal for reaching the 10k milestone is a great motivator.
If you’re training for the London Landmarks Half Marathon in April, this 10k is perfect as part of your training programme. By February you should be able to breeze 10k ahead of the 13.1 miles (that’s 21k) in April.

The Local Landmarks 10k is the brainchild of Tommy’s, who also organise the award-winning London Landmarks Half Marathon and, new for 2023, the London Landmarks Skyscraper Challenge, to benefit the entire charity sector. Over 3,000 runners took place in the inaugural Local Landmarks in 2022 raising £70,000 for Tommy’s. All profits from the Landmarks 10k will be donated to Tommy’s, the UK’s largest pregnancy and baby loss charity, to fund their pioneering research.

Lia Fyles, Race Director said, “Not everyone can take part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon. The distance can be daunting for some, especially if they are new to running or perhaps building up their fitness. The Local Landmarks embodies the same fun, inclusive spirit of the LLHM. Last year’s event showed that the shorter distance that people could walk, run or wheelchair really captured people’s imagination. I loved seeing everyone’s pictures of them taking part in the Local Landmarks, and how creative people got with mapping their 10k routes around their local area. I can’t wait to see where people run to this year!”

The Local Landmarks 10k on 19th February is open to everyone of all ages and abilities from across the globe. Registration is £17.50. All registered runners who complete the challenge will receive an exclusive collectible medal, their very own golden telephone box – a historical landmark in its own right! It promises to be an active summer for children and young teens who are studying at the London Enterprise Academy (LEA) as they go along to this year’s Summer School.

Many of the activities are taking place at the Academy in Commercial Road, but venues include the Rope Walk Park (Berner Pitch) and the youngsters can also visit Epping Forest for some serious hiking.

To help them keep fit over the summer break, pupils can choose from a range of team and solo games – table tennis, badminton, football, cricket, hockey, basketball – as well as less common ones such as archery. There are also trips to the Trampoline Park and time to enjoy water sports, mountain biking and walking through a forest.

Sport is not only important for keeping fit. It also helps growing children and teens develop hand-eye co-ordination and social skills such as working as a team and communication skills.

There will also be plenty of time to relax, with trips to the cinema and opportunities to play board games and undertake art projects.

The Summer School is free to all children, not just those who on the roll at the LEA, aged 8-14.  Sessions are held from 10am to 2.30pm and continue until 19th August.

For further information, ring 020-7426 0746.
