FIRST IT WAS football. Then it was cricket. And now the third sport has entered the Mayor’s Cup Family: it’s badminton. Tournaments – in the three categories of Juniors, Adults and Doubles – will take place over three weekends in April.
Over 55s
The first group on the courts are the Seniors – that’s the over 55s, who will play doubles only. Men’s doubles will be played on Saturday, 5th April, followed by the Women’s doubles tournament on Sunday, 6th April. Matches take place between 10am and 3pm each day, at Mile End Park Leisure Centre. There is an entry fee of £20 per player.
Adults – 18-55 years
The Adults category offers men the chance to compete in a singles tournament, with women being offered a doubles tournament. These tournaments will be played on Saturday, 12th and Sunday, 13th April respectively. Matches will take place between 10am and 3pm at the John Orwell Sports Centre in Tench Street, Wapping. The entry fee is £20 per player.
Juniors – 13-17
Girls and boys will each play singles. Matches take place on Saturday, 26th April (boys) and Sunday, 27th April (girls) and will be played from 10am to 3pm at Poplar Baths Leisure Centre in Poplar. There is a £10 entry fee per player.
Players must register in advance for the tournament online (see below), and parents will have to give consent for all players under 16 years old. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis – so don’t delay!
